Rider's Almanack i001

A number of years ago visiting relatives in Staffordshire, England.  We decided to take a drive into the countryside to take in a nearby castle.  My memory of that drive is of an abidingly lovely countryside.  The destination as I recall was not large nor very memorable.  However, exiting the hill on which the keep stood was a very old church and it was being renovated.  We stopped to look at it and the vicar was gracious enough to show us around, despite all the carpentry work going on.  Almost at the door on our way out I noted a small rickety book shelf that had been dragged out into the middle of the floor.  There was a sign indicating that the books it held were for sale to support the restoration efforts.   There I discovered this wonderfully old book, from 1787.  The inside cover says I paid four pounds for the book.   I honestly don't remember what we paid, except I know it wasn't much.
I haven't seen a copy of this book anywhere online and all such books have no copyright nor can one be acquired.  So, we thought we would scan the book and place the images online here for anyone interested in the historical record from the point of view of 1787.  We wanted as many as possible to experience the history this manuscript represents.  Those not familiar with language from that time will quickly notice spelling differences for common words.  We will let you explore those on your own.

All of these images may be clicked to enlarge them for better review.  I will try to get the entire book posted here.  It may take awhile to get done so please bear with me.  Advertiser revenue helps us maintain such projects.  Their products and services help us to bring these digital projects to anyone who finds them of interest and we appreciate your patronage of their offerings.  Without their adverts and your participation by clicking ads, these projects might not be possible.

This is a historically important document in that it names specific places and people in England, Ireland, Scotland and America.  The United States was still very new at that time.  The constitution was only then coming into its own, the continental congress having taken eleven years from 1776 to produce it.  We hope these images bring this text alive for those interested in history.
